CQ-Roll Call’s Joseph J. Schatz Wins the Sandy Hume Memorial Award for Excellence in Political Journalism

Washington, D.C. (June 29, 2010) — CQ-Roll Call Group, the nation's leading provider of news, analysis and information on Congress, today announced that Joseph J. Schatz has won the 2010 National Press Club's Sandy Hume Memorial Award for Excellence in Political Journalism. Schatz is the fifth CQ-Roll Call reporter to win the Hume award since it was established in 1999.

Schatz's June 2009 CQ Weekly cover piece, "China: Duet With the Dragon," was hailed by the National Press Club as a "… very well written, balanced and comprehensive analysis of the complicated U.S.-China relationship. The stories were readable yet exhaustively detailed. He did a great job exploring the political implications of such an important story, and the centerpiece article was bolstered with charts and sidebars that expanded on several key aspects of the relationship." The story is available at:

"The U.S. relationship with China is one of the most complicated foreign policy areas to write about," said Mike Mills, senior vice president and editorial director for CQ-Roll Call. "Joe's rigorous reporting and expert analysis are well rewarded with this distinguished recognition."

The award is named in memory of Sandy Hume, the reporter for The Hill who broke the story of the aborted 1997 coup against House Speaker Newt Gingrich. It honors excellence and objectivity in political coverage by reporters 34 years old or younger for either a single story of great distinction or for continuing coverage of one political topic.

Schatz is a senior writer with CQ-Roll Call covering taxes, trade and other economic issues. Since joining the staff in 2000, he also has covered budget, appropriations and financial services issues on Capitol Hill. From 2006 to 2008, Schatz covered politics and business in southern Africa as a freelance journalist in Zambia, writing for the Associated Press and other news outlets.

Schatz's win marks the third year in a row that CQ has won the Hume award. Staff writer Tim Starks won the honor in 2009 and former staff writer Jonathan Allen was awarded the Hume in 2008.
