Roll Call Writers Post Five Awards in the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association Editorial Contest

Washington, D.C. (May 5, 2010) — CQ-Roll Call Group today announced that Roll Call columnist Morton Kondracke and staff writers Jennifer Yachnin, Elizabeth Brotherton, Emily Yehle and Alison McSherry each took home honors in the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association 2009 Editorial Contest.

The awards were presented as follows:

  • Morton M. Kondracke. First Place, Local Column: Critical Thinking
The judges praised his “cogent, clear explanation” of the issue in his column, “Democrats Should Reform Medicare, Not Universalize it.”
  • Jennifer Yachnin. First Place, Investigative Reporting
Her story “Members of Congress Make Questionable Use of Property Tax Break” drew unqualified praise from the judges, who state, “No Contest. A textbook example of investigative reporting. As good as it gets.”
  • Elizabeth Brotherton. Second Place, Environmental Reporting
Elizabeth’s story, “Hill Hosts City’s First Carbon-Neutral House,” skillfully localizes a national issue for Roll Call’s target audience – the Capitol Hill community.
  • Emily Yehle. Second Place, Feature Story Profile
Her story “Anti-Jaywalking Cop Retires After 34 Years” offered up an interesting subject, timeliness, and a great approach to tell the story.
  • Alison McSherry. Second Place, Feature Story
Alison’s “Freshmen Seek Splash in Debuts,” a great example of artfully executed trend reporting.

“These awards celebrate the kind of quality journalism that makes Roll Call essential to life on Capitol Hill,” said Mike Mills, editorial director and senior vice president, CQ-Roll Call Group. “Each of these writers is contributing to the 55-year tradition of credible, accurate and compelling reporting that makes Roll Call the newspaper of Capitol Hill.”
