David Hawkings

As the editor of the CQ Roll Call Daily Briefing, David Hawkings offers forward-looking, non-partisan analysis of the top stories in Congress and around official and political Washington—online or by email, just before lunchtime every weekday.

Hawkings has been the Daily Briefing's editor since its launch just after Election Day 2010. Before that he spent six years as managing editor of CQ Weekly, a newsweekly covering the policies, people and politics of Washington with a particular focus on Capitol Hill.

He has also been the company's senior editor for legislative affairs; co-editor of "Politics in America," CQ Roll Call's signature reference work on members of Congress; the weekly magazine's economics editor and its congressional affairs editor; and managing editor of the CQ Daily Monitor, the predecessor of CQ Today.

A native of New York and a graduate of Bucknell University, before coming to CQ in 1995 he was a correspondent in the Washington Bureau of Thomson Newspapers and a reporter, columnist and editor at the San Antonio Light.

As a student of the politics and culture of Congress for two decades, he makes frequent appearances as a guest commentator on Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, CSPAN and National Public Radio. He offers analysis every Monday and Friday mornings on NPR's Washington affiliate, WAMU.

He lives in Washington with his wife, Betsy, and their two sons.
