Thomson Reuters Adds CQ Roll Call Washington Briefings to WestlawNext

CQ Roll Call’s securities, banking and energy coverage will be available in WestlawNext Practitioner Insights

Eagan, Minn., Jan. 29, 2013 – Thomson Reuters and CQ Roll Call will join forces to provide WestlawNext® customers exclusive coverage of securities, banking and energy policy developments in the federal regulatory agencies and Congress. The product, Washington Briefings, will cover three legal practice areas – securities, banking and energy. CQ Roll Call Washington Securities Briefing, Washington Banking Briefing and Washington Energy Briefing will appear in Practitioner Insights – new practice area-specific pages on WestlawNext – later in the first quarter.

The alliance between Thomson Reuters and CQ Roll Call will provide WestlawNext customers exclusive current awareness content and analysis from the CQ Roll Call newsroom in Washington, D.C., leveraging CQ Roll Call’s world-class expertise in legislative and regulatory policy reporting. Regulatory content will focus on activity involving federal agencies in each practice area, providing news and analysis on proposed and enacted regulations, trends and other developments. On the legislative side, CQ Roll Call will provide Thomson Reuters with news and analysis of legislative proposals and congressional actions, with an eye toward the needs of lawyers and other legal professionals.

According to Leann Blanchfield, vice president of Product Development at Thomson Reuters, more than ever, busy legal professionals need current awareness information, analysis and insight, delivered as part of their workflow, to stay up to speed on their practice area and their clients.

“CQ Roll Call's in-depth coverage of government and legislative activity will provide legal professionals with the knowledge they need to effectively support their clients,” said Blanchfield. “The inclusion of this sought-after content will provide enormous depth, especially in our practice area-specific pages on WestlawNext. It will be a powerful addition to our current awareness collection.”

According to Keith White, managing director for CQ Roll Call, the addition of the CQ Roll Call Washington Briefings is a perfect complement to Thomson Reuters’ expertise in providing news and information for an audience of lawyers and legal professionals. “The Washington Briefings will provide critical insights to WestlawNext customers working in banking, energy and securities-related practice areas,” he said “These products have been developed for the WestlawNext users, gathered and reported with the same quality standards and rigor that we apply to all CQ Roll Call editorial products.

“Since 1945, CQ Roll Call has prided itself on its fiercely non-partisan and objective coverage of legislative policy and politics,” he added. “This agreement allows us to expand the scope of our coverage to serve a new set of professionals who rely on Thomson Reuters for their legal information needs.”

Practitioner Insights, a new current awareness offering for WestlawNext customers, will debut next week during LegalTech New York and will be available to customers shortly thereafter. It will contain legal insights, alerts and other current awareness content, including Reuters Legal news and Wolters Kluwer Daily news summaries with original, attorney-authored analysis that puts context around breaking legal developments, as well as articles written by Westlaw attorney editors. Initial offerings will include Antitrust, Employment, Health, and Intellectual Property, as well as Bankruptcy and Securities.

The CQ Roll Call relationship further strengthens current awareness offerings from Thomson Reuters for key practice areas. Just last June, Thomson Reuters announced that it had joined forces with Wolters Kluwer Law and Business to include Wolters Kluwer’s Employment Law Daily and IP Law Daily as part of the current awareness content set on WestlawNext. Since that time, Thomson Reuters has added Wolters Kluwer secondary-source content across a range of practice areas in law and business compliance, and has also released prestigious Wolters Kluwer Antitrust and Healthcare dailies to its Practitioner Insights pages.

In addition, Thomson Reuters will introduce a new Alert Center later in the first quarter. The Alert Center will bring breaking legal developments, client and competitor information, and other alerting capabilities together in one convenient location on WestlawNext, where alerts can be more simply managed to help customers make more informed decisions, serve their clients and grow their practice.

“We like where we’re going in legal current awareness and who we’re working with to get there,” said Blanchfield. “Bringing together legal analysis from Wolters Kluwer Law and Business, CQ Roll Call’s policy and legislative expertise, and Westlaw’s search capabilities and editorial talent, we are building the clear leader in high-relevance, current awareness information and analysis for the legal marketplace.”
