Roll Call Announces Key Editorial Promotions

Emily Pierce appointed to Deputy Editor and Shira Toeplitz named Politics Editor

Washington D.C. (May 6, 2013) – CQ Roll Call, an Economist Group business, announced today two key editorial promotions at Roll Call, the source for news on Capitol Hill since 1955. Emily Pierce, formerly Senate and White House Editor will become Deputy Editor, overseeing all facets of newsgathering and content creation. And longtime political reporter Shira Toeplitz will become Politics Editor, leading Roll Call’s team of political reporters through the next election cycle.

“I am thrilled to bring Emily and Shira into these critical new roles,” said David Rapp, Editor of Roll Call. “Both are long-time Roll Call staffers, consummate newswomen and natural newsroom leaders. They are both creative thinkers, so they will be instrumental to Roll Call’s growth, especially as we continue expanding our digital offerings and moving into new content platforms.”

Emily Pierce has been at Roll Call for 10 years, serving in various positions including Senate Editor and Senate Reporter. Before joining Roll Call, she spent six years at CQ covering the banking and technology sector, campaigns and elections, as well as Senate leadership.

“I am excited to be taking on this position,” said Pierce. “Under David’s leadership, I am looking forward to working on Roll Call’s digital expansion and launching new editorial products.”

Toeplitz first joined Roll Call in 2007 as a Politics Writer. Considered an authority on congressional races, she spearheaded Roll Call’s coverage of the decennial redistricting process. She is a frequent guest on political news programs and is regularly featured as a guest speaker on politics and journalism.

“Roll Call’s Politics Team is one of the best in Washington, D.C.,” said Toeplitz. “Leading this group is a fantastic opportunity to continue Roll Call’s storied history as the must read for Congressional campaign coverage.”
